Tesla’s former VP of Manufacturing is going to build all-electric buses at Proterra

Josh Ensign, until recently Tesla’s Vice President of Manufacturing, left the automaker in somewhat of a controversy earlier this year when it was reported that himself and Vice President of Production Greg Reichow, two of the top manufacturing executives at Tesla, were let go following what CEO Elon Musk later referred to as the “production hell” of the first half of 2016 due to a difficult Model X ramp up.

Tesla denied that their departures had anything do with the Model X production issues. The company soon after hired Peter Hochholdinger, Audi’s Senior Director of Production, to lead vehicle manufacturing.

Now we learn that Ensign is staying in the electric vehicle manufacturing business. It was announced today that he is joining all-electric bus maker Proterra as Chief Operating Officer. more…

Electric vehicles are cheaper to fuel in all 50 states, savings between $300 to $1,300 per year

It might sound like an obvious thing to most people, electricity is cheaper than gas, but I find that people are not really aware of the electricity rate discrepancy around the US and the world. It’s understandable. Who has time to track electricity and gas prices outside of your own market? Plugless has time and did it.

The company came up with a neat study looking at gas prices and electricity rates – without taking into account time-of-use rates where available – in each state over the last year and came to the conclusion that electric vehicles are cheaper to fuel in all 50 states. more…

Tesla is about to increase its lead in semi-autonomous driving w/ ‘Tesla Vision’: computer vision based on NVIDIA’s parallel computing

It’s arguable, of course, but third-party tests have shown Tesla Autopilot outperforming other semi-autonomous or advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) from Mercedes, Hyundai and Cadillac by a wide margin.  That, and the fact that Tesla is gaining more real world data in its vehicles than anyone else would seem to indicate Tesla is a leader in the field, if not the leader.

Rimac Concept One beats Porsche 918 Spyder in quarter mile, the era of ICE supercars is over

With the release of the Tesla Model S P100D in August, and deliveries last month I knew it was time to RIP combustion engines on the supercar circuit. The P100D hits 60mph in 2.5 seconds and hits a quarter mile in just over 10 seconds. The Model S also seats as many people (7) as a minivan, is very street smart and it part of a large and growing production line vs. the typical supercar which are only hand made in batches of 100 or so. Lawsuits are piling up against Tesla (TSLA) over the SolarCity (SCTY) merger, Tesla says ‘without merit’

Last month, we reported that Tesla disclosed that it was fighting 4 different lawsuits from stockholders over the SolarCity merger alleging breached of fiduciary duties in connection with the proposed merger . We now learn that the number has gone up to 7 lawsuits against Tesla CEO Elon Musk ahead of a scheduled court hearing to consolidate the actions on October 14th. more…

Google starts deploying its self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans: first prototypes spotted

While Tesla’s fleet recently reached 222 million miles driven on Autopilot in about a year, Google’s fleet of self-driving cars just passed the 2-million miles mark last month after 7 years on the road. As we previously discussed, Tesla’s Autopilot miles are not really equivalent to Google’s self-driving miles, but it still gives us a good indication of the speed at which each company is deploying their semi-autonomous and autonomous programs.

Now Google is about to speed up its effort by deploying a lot more vehicles through its partnership with Fiat-Chrysler to build a fleet of self-driving Pacifica, Chrysler’s new plug-in hybrid minivan. The first few prototypes were spotted in Mountain View over the weekend. more…
